Vice Chancellor's Public Debate!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen, for your viewing pleasure tonight, Wednesday August 29, The Monash Association of Debaters is running the annual VC's Public Debate.
This debate on "That Australia Should Abandon Workchoices" promises to be a deeply inciteful and exciting event. It will be held in Central One Lecture Theatre from 6:30. For more details on the event, visit our Public Debate page.
Women's BP Tournament!!!
This year it is Monash and Melbourne's great pleasure to host the annual Women's BP tournament. This competition, held over the weekend of September 21-24, is dedicated to showcasing the great talent of our female debaters, as well as offering some unbeatable social functions in Australia's most beloved city.
If any women in the club want to find out more about this they find it all on the Official Women's Website or by contacting our Women's Officer, Mel Birch. Obviously as Monash is co-hosting we hope to have a massive contingent to take the most of the debating and adjudicating experience on offer at this tournament. We encourage everyone interested to sign up ASAP as either a debater or adjudicator. There is no doubt that this will be one of the best BP tournaments in Australia this year!
AGM!!!
It's Nearly Exec Choosing Time...
On September 3, MAD is holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM). This is your chance to vote for next year's executive committee, or even run for a position on this prestigious committee.
The AGM will be held in the Monday Lunchtime Meeting (1pm) in L1. For this meeting we NEED to have at least 29 members in attendance. So make sure you get there to make your vote and make it count! MAD 2008 need YOU!
Freehills!!!
MAD's most prestigeous BP internal!!!
The first night of the Freehills BP tournament is only days away. If you are yet to sign up as a debater or adjudicator, be sure to do it ASAP. You can sign up on our Internal Comps Page and filling out the form.
This is an event not to be missed. Come and debate or adjudicate in what promises to be a great showcase of MAD's BP talent. No matter how experienced or inexperienced you are, this competition is bound to improve your skills in preparation for ANU Spring Tournament, Melbourne and Sydney Minis and, of course, WORLDS!!!
Karaoke Night!!!
MAD's first big social event for Semester 2!!!
MAD's first annual Novice Karaoke Cup will be on Thursday August 9, between 6 pm and 9 pm. The venue for this event, the traditional highlight of MAD's social calendar, will be Kbox Karaoke, 52 La Trobe Street, Melbourne. Everyone's welcome to come, but because we want to get younger debaters more involved in the club, they get cheaper tickets. Basically, if you are a Novice (haven't debated at an Australs or Worlds, or are new to MAD this year) tickets only cost $10, and for everyone else, tickets are $15. This is better value than a DFO because MAD will subsidise drinks, provide delicious finger food, and give you access to the best room in the best karaoke venue in the Southern hemisphere (maybe). We'll also be organising post drinks in the city.
Tickets are on sale at the next two MAD Mondays, and because we can only fit in a certain amount of people, its worth getting in early. If you have any questions, please call Kiran on 0408 389 580, or Georgia on 0409 020 809.
Semester 2!!!
British Parliamentary Time!!!
Welcome back to another fun semester of uni and an even funner semester of debating! After an amazing epitome to MAD's 3-on-3 efforts, it's time to get stuck into BP style debating.
Now obviously some of you are a bit concerned by this change of styles, especially those unfamiliar with BP debating. However, MAD is here to help. Starting on Monday July 23 at 5pm in L1 MAD will be running a training session for all members to learn/relearn this fun filled style of debating. There will be a second training session, the following Monday evening, to really boost everyone's understanding of BP to ensure the best quality of debate when we get stuck into Freehill's later in the semester.
Of course, before trying to learn BP style, a demonstration of such a debate would be helpful. Never fear, MAD has you covered here too. Next Monday at 1pm in L1 come and see the MAD "all stars" BP debate. This debate is guaranteed to give a clear example of how BP should run, as well as just being a lot of fun (that's right, 2 benefits for the price of 1)!! So come along and join in the fun of BP with all these great events put on by some of Australia's best BP debaters.
Australs 2007!!!
MAD Dominates MARA Australs!!!
Despite narrowly losing our grip on Troy, MADdies absolutely dominated every facet of Australs 2007! After the 8 rounds of debating, in a phenomenal achievement Monash 1 and 2 finished on top of the ladder, setting off talk of an all Monash Grand Final! Both teams narrowly fell to stiff opposition in the finals - Monash 2 in an unfortunate loss to the eventual champions UQ2, and Monash 1 lost to the tournament favourites Vic1, in what was undoubtably the best debate of the tournament. This is to say nothing of our other 4 teams, all of which performed outstandingly well and finished inside the top half of the ladder. MADdies dominated the speaker prizes, Fiona Prowse ranking 2nd in Australasia, Amit Golder ranking 3rd, and Tim Jeffrie ranking 7th, while Sashi, Kiran, Ravi and Victor all ranked inside the top 50. On the adjudication front, Julian Campbell broke into the finals and Jake Clifton and Tim Sonnreich judged the Grand Final, ensuring a MAD presence in the Australs Grand Final yet again. A special mention also goes to Fiona, who debated in the Women's debate.
Success wasn't only in the debate rooms though, as MADdies staged awesome room parties every night, including an unforgettable final night party of 150 people, that few actually remember. We also won new respect, putting together possibly the greatest bid Australs has ever seen, but losing out to our good friends from the Philippines. We also released a new edition of the Monash Debating Review to an extremely warm reception, and became known for some members' wild and repeated bedroom exploits! Well done troops.
Australs 2007!!!
Follow the action!!!
Thats right ladies and gentlemen. Here for you now we have an official Australs '07 results page.
This page has been specially created for the tournament to ensure you have a place to find the latest update on all the action of our awesome contingent over the coming 2 weeks.

ADAM SUCCESS!!!
Fantastic Pre-Australs Display by Monash!!!
From the 22nd to the 24th of June, Melbourne University hosted ADAM '07. This tournament, the last major 3-on-3 IV before Australs, was a great success!
This tournament was not only a testimony to the hard work of those who organised and ran the competition; it was also a display of the great talent
of Monash, Melbourne, and even some other Australian Universities. In particular, the tournament showed the great strength of the MAD Australs contingent. Monash managed to
break 3 teams into the finals. Congratulations must be afforded to all these teams for the great quality of debating they displayed across the weekend.
To make matters even better for MAD, Monash 1 managed to power on through the tough competiton of ADAM to win the Grand Final. In a very close and well fought debate on the topic
"that we should criminalise holocaust denial", Fiona, Amit and Tim came out with a win and demonstrated the high level of skill that they possess. We wish them and all the other MAD teams the best of luck in carrying this on to Australs in KL!!
Congratulations to all Monash debaters and adjudicators on a fantastic weekend. The quality of debating and judging was great, and is a testimony to the great skills and training of our wonderful club!!!
Australs Send Off Debate!
Last Chance to See the Glorious Monash 1 before Australs!
Australs is known as one of the most prestigious 3 on 3 tournaments in the World, with between 70 and 100 teams participating from all over Australia,
New Zealand and Asia. This year, MAD is sending 6 teams and 5 adjudicators to UT Mara, Malaysia to compete in the tournament from 2-10 July.
In traditional MAD and MUDS style we will again be holding a Monash 1 vs. Melbourne 1
send off debate before Australs this year. As MAD hosted the event last year, it is
now Melbourne's turn to do so. The night will take place at Pugg Mahones in Carlton
from 6pm on Tuesday 26th June. The debate is set to start at 7:30pm with the Amazing Amit Golder,
Fantastic Fiona Prowse and Triumphant Tim Jeffrie ably defending Monash, while those speaking for Melbourne
will be Chris Hibbard, Lauren Knight and Seamus Coleman.
This will be a brilliant night and MAD would love to see as many of our members coming along
to the send off as possible. Last year, both Monash 1 and Melbourne 1 made it to the grand
final at Australs, and the send off is not only a great opportunity to witness a debate of
very high quality, but also to catch up with all of your MAD and MUDS friends in a casual setting after exams.
You can register your attendance by visiting the Facebook event that has been set up
http://unimelbedu.facebook.com/event.php?eid=2533485931 or by emailing Duncan Campbell (MUDS Public Debates Officer)
We hope to see all of you there at what promises to be a fantastic event. It will surely be a night not to be missed!
ADAM!
Sign Up for ADAM tournament!
As the first semester of 2007 draws to a close, what better way to celebrate the beginning of the midyear break
than another fun filled debating tournament? ADAM will be held from Friday the 22nd of June to the evening of June 24th.
Unless you are going to Australs, this is your last chance to experience 3-on-3 debating for the year, before we launch
into BP in Semester Two. For those who ARE going to Australs, this will be a great chance to get that extra bit of
debating or adjudicating practice before heading off to represent MAD in Malaysia.
The registration fee is $60 for debaters and $45 for adjudicators.
To sign up as a team (complete or partial), individual debater, or adjudicator, check out our IV page.
Make sure you get your application in quickly as the deadline is Tuesday June 12.
SORENSEN!
"The Underagers" victorious in Sorensen 2007!
Congratulations to "The Underagers" for their victory in the Sorensen Internal Competition that was recently held at The Nott.
Arguing "that parents should be made to take good parenting courses", they managed to beat "The closest thing you'll ever get to a foursome"
in a 3-2 split decision by our "five star" adjudicating panel, comprised of Tim Sonnreich, Amit Golder, Julian Campbell, Sashi Balaraman and Meg O'Brien.
Well done also to Andrew Black, who ranked as the best novice speaker for the tournament, and to Jake Clifton who was the best speaker for the competition.
The level of debating was fantastic, so to achieve these rankings is a huge effort.
The Grand Final for Sorensen 2007!
Make sure you don't miss the final of the most prestigious internal comp
on the MAD calendar. See "The Closest Thing You'll Ever Get To A Foursome"
take on "The Underagers" in what promises to be a great debate.
The debate will be held at the Notting Hill Hotel (260-262 Ferntree Gully Road)
on Monday the 21st of May. A "stumbling party" will be leaving the MAD office at
4:45 to get there early to chill out, eat parmas and drink beer. The topic will
be released at 7:00 for a 7:30 debate.
New Exec Members
Webmaster and Schools Training Officer Positions Filled!
It is with great pleasure that the MAD exec announces the co-option of two new members. Dominic Guinane and Kiran Iyer are MAD's new webmaster and schools training officer respectively.
We wish the two of them all the best in these positions and are sure that they will do a great job in their work for the club.
Well done guys!!!
REGRESSIVE DEBATE!
Come to Regressive this Friday night!
What:
The ultimate debating party, runs backwards! As we sip on the free grog
all night and polish off the jelly shots, dinner is served and a debate
takes place - but in reverse. The adjudication will be given before
dessert is served... then we'll have the 3rd speeches and following
that the main course... right through to the entree and 1st Aff speech.
The topic is 'That we should introduce compulsory sterilisation for ugly people'.
Of course, the
adjudicator speaks first, and is able to set crazy dares for the
debaters, and the audience, to perform throughout the night. Often the
speakers themselves, under the rubric of "rebuttal" compel the earlier
(or later, depending on your point of view) speakers to make ridiculous
and embarassing arguments, perform stunts, eat and drink random things,
remove clothing, etc...
Past
Regressives have involved pillow fights, Sammy K removing his clothes
repeatedly, lewd acts involving tomatoes, shark alarms being set off...
you get the drift.
When: Friday 11th May, 7.30pm
Where: Damian's house, 11 Melrose Ave, Malvern East
For those getting
public transport, it is very close to East Malvern train station on the
Glen Waverley line and just a short tram ride from Caufield Station.
What’s provided: MAD provides the main course and drinks
What to bring:
1st years – desserts, 2nd & 3rd years – salads and
entrees, 4th plus years – snacks (chips and dips, bikkies,
lollies)
Hope to see you there for a night of fun and frivolity!
Any questions, contact Georgia on 0409020809 or via email.

MAD's EASTERS SUCCESS!
MAD
recently sent 63 of our members to Sydney for the first intervarsity
tournament of the year – Easters! As usual MAD walked (crawled)
away from the tournament successfully.
Our debaters continued doing us proud, with 3 of our teams
successfully
making the ‘break’ into the finals – a great
achievement made even more impressive by the fact that MAD's teams were
selected to spread debating talent around, as opposed to other
universities who 'stack' their teams. Congratulations
to MAD’s Octo-finalist teams Monash 7: Victor Finkel, Nita Rao
and Jenny Corcoran and Monash 15: Claire Lindsey, Viv Jones and Scott
Dawson. Special congratulations go to our Quarter Finalist team, Monash
14: Fiona Prowse, Vera Lam and Justin Lipinski – well done! Fiona
deserves further congratulation on ranking as the 3rd best overall
speaker of the tournament.
MAD also did well on the adjudication front with former MAD President
Jake Clifton adjudicating the Grand Final, Tim Jeffrie reaching the
Semi Finals and Prasanna Venkataraman and Amit Golder reaching the Octo
Finals as adjudicators.
Lastly, huge props to the entire massive contingent of Monash Debaters
and Adjudicators on coming to damp, smelly Sydney and as usual having
an absolute blast at every social function, including the circus party(pictured above left) and all the times
inbetween.
