| MAD utilises its champions to not only provide a quality Schools' Training program, but also provides a fantastic training program for those within the club, and indeed, MAD's continued success has come not through picking the off the best DAV participants, but through the mentoring and advice provided by its Australasian and World champions on any given Monday night.
One way our best debaters pass on their knowledge and experience is through the growing range of Matter Articles now available for students to peruse. But there's nothing like engaging and asking questions of a champion on a Monday night. Yes, Monday evenings are usually remembered for the many internal competitions that MAD has had over the years, however, when competitions are not on, MAD holds training sessions for its own members.
Beginning at the very start of the year, member training covers the basics - what a debate is, what the speaker roles are, and basics of arguments and rebuttal. As the year progresses, member training introduces members to more complex topics - such as advanced debating techniques, adjudicating and different styles of debating.
Sometimes, member training even has a guest speaker (usually one of the more experienced members), who gives a talk on some issue about the world at large, thus giving members the factual grounding they need to debate various topics. These sessions are particularly useful - especially when internal competitions are coming up, as quite often the topics in the competitions are related to recent issues discussed at member training.
