Whilst MAD Members have participated in many public debates organised by other bodies, every year MAD itself organises a free debate that is open to the public on a topical and stimulating issue, in what has become known as the annual Vice-Chancellor's Public Debate. This event is generously sponsored by the office of the Vice-Chancellor, and as such we name the debate after the Vice-Chancellor. The speakers in the debate are usually prominent representatives of their field, and the debate is always a lively and entertaining affair. Past issues include human rights, international terrorism and stem cell research.
"That The West Should Engage With Hamas: A Solution To The Israel/Palestine Conflict?": With the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine exacerbated by the most recent incursions in Gaza, all parties are looking towards a more innovative approach to finding peace. Hamas has governed the Gaza portion of the Palestinian territories since June 2007, however the European Union and the United States, among others have listed Hamas as a terrorist organisation. The Obama administration has indicated a willingness to depart from the Bush isolationist doctrine and engage in talks with Hamas. The question now lies as to whether engagement with Hamas will be of benefit or detriment to the peace process.
The debate will be held in Central 1 lecture theatre at Monash Clayton Campus on Tuesday 13 October, from 6:30pm. The debate will be chaired by the new Vice-Chancellor, Ed Byrne, and light refreshments will be provided.
We have a star-studded line-up for the evening. On the Affirmative:
Malcolm Fraser: Former Prime Minister of Australia
Michael Shaik: Public Advocate, Australians for Palestine
Debra Smith:Terrorism Expert
Speaking in the Negative:
Mark Dreyfus: Labor MP
Dr Danny Lam: President, Zionist Council of Victoria
Tim Jeffrie: Australasian Debating Champion
Media coverage of the debate included a couple of articles on the debate, one from the Australians For Palestine website, and one from the Jewish News website.
