Whilst MAD Members have participated in many public debates organised by other bodies, every year MAD itself organises a free debate that is open to the public on a topical and stimulating issue, in what has become known as the annual Vice-Chancellor's Public Debate. This event is generously sponsored by the office of the Vice-Chancellor, and as such we name the debate after the Vice-Chancellor. The speakers in the debate are usually prominent representatives of their field, and the debate is always a lively and entertaining affair. Past issues include human rights, international terrorism and stem cell research.
This year's Public Debates officer Damien Bruckard is currently organising a fantastic evening for a debate on the topic "That Australia should abandon WorkChoices". Speaking on this topic we have:
- Mordy Bromberg SC (labour lawyer, President of the Australian
Institute for Employment Rights, counsel in the High Court challenge
to Workchoices)
- Ken Philips (Director of Workplace Relations at the Institute of Public Affairs)
- Professor Julian Teicher (Director of the Monash Graduate School of Business and Economics)
- Professor Marilyn Pittard (Professor in the Faculty of Law with expertise in labour and employment law).
- One other guest speaker and a representitive from The Monash Association of Debaters.
The debate will be held in The Central One Lecture Theatre and commences at 6:30 on Wednesday August 29. Make sure you get there early to get a good seat, as this is sure to be a popular evening.
